Hey guys

When you open a margin account, how much does that mean i can borrow from the broker to trade with?

Typically, you can buy & sell stocks with 50% of your equity & 50% margin loan...this is a Federal regulation known as "Reg T". You'll also have "maintenance margin" which is a prescribed amount of liguid equity you must maintain, often in the 30% range, but it varies from broker to broker.

If you are new to trading you should not consider trading on margin untill you have a real good feel or handle on what you are doing. No offense but better to learn with a small amount of risk so you can trade another day. Just figured if you had to ask about margin than you probably should only be trading cash at this time. Good luck to you in whatever your choice might be.

Its ok i am not new to trading anymore, i am just considering margin to build my account up (hoping it doesnt go down hehehe). Laughing
